About the role
The main function of the Machine Shop Operator is to safely and efficiently operate machining equipment and produce quality aluminium and metal components used in the manufacture of commercial and industrial lighting fittings. The Machine Shop Operator is responsible for executing machining tasks as assigned by the Machine Shop Supervisor, maintaining equipment, and adhering to all health and safety requirements.
Key Performance Areas:
Machine Operation Operate machine shop equipment including saws, routers, drill presses, milling machines, and welding equipment under supervision. Correct setup and operation of assigned machinery. Produce parts to required specifications and tolerances.
Productivity & Task Execution Complete assigned work tasks efficiently and on schedule. Report any delays or equipment issues immediately to the Supervisor. Minimal rework or scrap generated.
Quality Control Conduct basic quality checks on own work. Ensure manufactured parts meet required specifications. Highlight any non-conformances to the Supervisor.
Health, Safety & Housekeeping Adhere to all health and safety policies. Use correct personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Report unsafe conditions or incidents immediately.
Equipment Care Conduct pre-start checks on equipment. Assist with basic maintenance and cleaning of machines. Report faults or maintenance needs promptly.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & ABILITY REQUIREMENTS
Required:
· Relevant mechanical or engineering workshop training or qualification (e.g., NQF Level 2 or 3 in engineering, fitting, or fabrication).
· 3+ years' experience in a machine shop or similar manufacturing environment.
· Good understanding of machining processes and safe machine operation.
· Experience operating milling machines, automatic / manual saws, copy routers, drill presses and other general workshop equipment.
· Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and work instructions.
· Knowledge of correct use of hand tools and power tools.
Advantageous:
· Trade test in relevant discipline
· Experience working with aluminium components.
· Mig / Tig welding skills.
· Experience in commercial or industrial lighting manufacturing environments
