1. Role Purpose

The Lighting Technician – Team Lead is responsible for leading and supervising lighting installation teams while also performing advanced fault diagnosis, remedial work at customer sites, and workshop-based luminaire repairs. The role ensures installations are executed to specification, faults are efficiently resolved, and workmanship meets company quality and safety standards.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Team Leadership & Site Supervision

  • Lead, supervise, and coordinate lighting installer teams on project and service sites.
  • Allocate daily tasks and ensure work is completed according to drawings, schedules, and technical requirements.
  • Provide on-site technical guidance and problem-solving support to installers.
  • Monitor workmanship quality and ensure compliance with company standards and safety regulations.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and enforce safe working practices.
  • Mentor and train installers to improve technical skills and installation quality.
  • Liaise with project managers, site supervisors, and clients to coordinate activities and resolve site issues.

B. On-Site Fault Assessment & Remedial Work

  • Diagnose lighting system faults at installed sites, including electrical, driver, control gear, and installation-related issues.
  • Identify root causes and define corrective actions required.
  • Perform minor and intermediate on-site repairs where feasible.
  • Recommend workshop repairs or component replacement for complex failures.
  • Compile clear technical reports detailing faults, remedial work, and recommendations.

C. Workshop Luminaire Repairs

  • Assess, repair, and test faulty luminaires returned to the workshop.
  • Diagnose component failures (LED modules, drivers, surge protection, connectors, thermal management).
  • Conduct electrical safety and functional testing after repair.
  • Maintain accurate repair documentation and service records.

D. Quality Control & Compliance

  • Inspect completed installations to ensure they meet design, quality, and safety standards.
  • Identify recurring installation or product issues and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure repaired luminaires are fit for service prior to redeployment.
  • Uphold all relevant electrical and occupational health & safety regulations.

E. Reporting & Administration

  • Complete site reports, job cards, and repair documentation accurately and timeously.
  • Track material usage and report shortages or recurring failures.
  • Provide technical input for warranty, RMA, and remedial cost assessments.

3. Skills & Competencies

Technical

  • In-depth knowledge of LED lighting systems, drivers, and control gear.
  • Strong electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret lighting layouts, wiring diagrams, and schedules.
  • Experience with lighting control systems (DALI, 0–10V, sensors) advantageous.

Leadership & Interpersonal

  • Proven ability to lead and motivate installation teams.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to manage site activities under time and quality constraints.
  • Coaching and mentoring capability.

4. Minimum Requirements

  • Electrical trade qualification or relevant technical certification equivalent to NQF4
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in lighting installation, fault-finding, and repairs.
  • At least 1–2 years in a supervisory or team lead role.
  • Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel.
  • Medically fit for site work, including working at heights.
